Trying to choose the right time for your Maui vacation—and worried you might book your trip just before or after an event you would have loved to experience?

Beaches, snorkeling, scenic drives, and sunsets may already be part of the plan. But sometimes one well-timed event gives a trip the story everyone remembers afterward.

You might meet Maui makers, visit local artists in their studios, join a coastal race, enjoy a live performance, or help count humpback whales from shore.

Some events are worth considering when you choose your travel dates. Others are simply a great bonus when they happen to overlap with your stay.

From November 2026 through March 2027, here are the upcoming Maui events worth knowing about, what each experience offers, and which ones may be worth planning part of your vacation around.

November: Discover What Maui Makes

Hawaiian Airlines Made In Maui County Festival

November 6–7, 2026 | Maui Arts & Cultural Center, Kahului

Souvenirs are easy to find. Bringing home something with a real connection to Maui can feel more meaningful.

The Hawaiian Airlines Made In Maui County Festival brings together Maui County businesses selling locally made foods, art, gifts, and other products.

Participating product vendors must be based in Maui County, and qualifying products must meet a minimum 51% Hawaii value-added requirement.

It is a chance to meet local makers, discover products you may not find in a typical souvenir shop, and support Maui businesses.

Worth adding to your trip if: You enjoy local food, shopping, handmade products, or meaningful gifts.

Late November and December: Add a Night of Live Comedy

Jo Koy and John Mulaney

November 30–December 2 and December 18, 2026 | Castle Theater, Kahului

Maui evenings do not always have to mean another sunset dinner.

Jo Koy’s Koy Meets World Tour runs November 30 through December 2 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater. John Mulaney’s Mister Whatever tour follows on December 18.

For repeat visitors especially, a live show can add something different after a day of beaches, sightseeing, or exploring.

Worth adding to your trip if: You already enjoy either comedian or want one evening that feels different from the rest of your Maui plans.

January: Run Along the Maui Coast

Maui Oceanfront Marathon

January 17, 2027 | Wailea to Launiupoko

Some races become part of the reason you travel.

The Maui Oceanfront Marathon begins at The Shops at Wailea and follows the coast through South Maui, continuing to the finish outside Launiupoko Beach Park. Additional race distances are also available.

For runners, it turns months of training into a destination experience with Maui scenery built into the race morning.

If only one person in your group is racing, the event can still fit easily into a longer vacation.

Plan around it if: You are running the race or traveling with someone who is.

January Through March: Do More Than Watch the Whales

Great Whale Count

January 30, February 27, and March 27, 2027 | Shoreline locations around Maui

Want to participate instead of simply observing?

The Great Whale Count brings volunteers to shoreline sites around Maui to record humpback whale activity as part of a long-running community science effort.

The 2027 counts run from 8:00 AM to noon on January 30, February 27, and March 27. Participants observe assigned areas and report whale sightings and behavior to site leaders.

It is a chance to spend part of your vacation contributing to whale research and conservation awareness.

Registration is required and opens December 14, 2026. Volunteers must participate from 8:00 AM to noon.

Good to know: Best for wildlife lovers who do not mind dedicating a half-day to the experience.

February: Experience Whale Season With More Context

Whale Tales

February 11–15, 2027 | The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua

Seeing a humpback offshore is memorable. Learning more about the animal can make the experience even more meaningful.

Whale Tales brings together researchers, photographers, conservationists, films, presentations, and marine education.

February is especially well-timed because January through March is typically the peak period for humpback whale abundance in Hawaii.

That makes it easy to pair whale watching with a deeper understanding of humpback behavior, migration, and conservation.

Worth planning around if: Whales are one of the main reasons you want to visit Maui.

February and March: Meet Maui’s Artists Where They Create

Maui Open Studios

February 20–21, February 27–28, and March 6–7, 2027

Art feels different when you meet the person who made it.

Maui Open Studios lets visitors meet local artists, explore their studios and exhibition spaces, and purchase work directly from the artists.

The 2027 weekends focus on different parts of Maui:

  • February 20–21: North Shore and Haiku
  • February 27–28: Kihei
  • March 6–7: Upcountry

Visiting hours are 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Choose a few studios, stop for lunch, and turn the day into a relaxed mix of art and exploring.

If you want to discover more creative stops, the Maui Art Guide highlights galleries, local artists, and other art experiences around the island.

Plan around it if: You enjoy art, meeting local creators, or bringing home something with a personal story behind it.

March: Add an Active Morning Without Giving Up the Day

Maui 5K

March 7, 2027 | Maui Ocean Center, Maalaea

You do not have to be a serious runner to take part.

The Maui 5K includes timed and untimed 5K options plus a one-mile run/walk, with the 5K beginning and ending at Maui Ocean Center.

Run it, walk with your family, then enjoy the rest of your Maui day.

Proceeds also help support fitness and recreation opportunities for Maui County schools.

Plan around it if: You want a family-friendly race, enjoy staying active while traveling, or like supporting a local cause.

5 Tips for Planning Your Maui Trip Around an Event

A good event should add to your vacation—not make the whole trip feel scheduled.

  • Confirm details before you go. Times, parking, venues, and registration requirements can change, so recheck the organizer’s website.
  • Book important experiences early. Race entries, tickets, and performances may sell out.
  • Check the location. Kapalua, Kahului, Maalaea, Wailea, and Lahaina can shape the rest of your day’s plans.
  • Pair it with nearby stops. Combine the event with a nearby beach, restaurant, or scenic stop instead of crossing Maui several times.
  • Leave some breathing room. Avoid filling every hour before and after the event. That same balance can help when planning Maui adventures without the rush.

The goal is not to do more. It is to make room for the experiences you would genuinely hate to miss.

Give Yourself Room Between the Big Plans

Once you know which events matter most, leave some space around them.

Go to the festival. Meet the artists. Count whales from shore. Run the race.

Then make room for the mornings when nobody wants an itinerary.

A Maui vacation rental through AA Oceanfront can make that easier. Have breakfast before an early event, come back for an afternoon break, eat in when you want a quiet night, or keep a full day open between bigger plans.

That flexibility gives you more room to enjoy both the moments you planned and the ones you did not.

Which Maui Event Fits Your Trip?

The best event is not necessarily the biggest.

It is the one that makes the trip feel more like your trip.

Choose the experience you would genuinely regret missing. Check it against your travel dates. Then leave enough room around it for Maui’s slower moments.

Explore Maui vacation rentals and choose a home base that makes both your event days and your unscheduled days easier to enjoy.
